Description

The conventional way to more pigmented broiler skin is via feed; corn, corn gluten, alfalfa and grass meal can all be used to achieve yellow or beige skin. However, in commercial broiler feed formulations alfalfa and grass meal are seldom used due to their low energy level. Their pigment comes mainly from fluctuating amounts of lutein instead of zeaxanthin, which makes it difficult to dose. Today, the most important substances for broiler skin pigmentation are C-30 ester (Lucantin® Yellow), canthaxanthin (Lucantin® Red).
